The Benefits of a Cold Shower!
To all our friends who put color in their hair, this is for you! Here at Roots we want your hair color to last as long as possible. We ensure this by using the best hair color products out there to give you a beautiful result, but we need your help too! There are many products you can use to help preserve hair color, but real longevity comes down to one thing: water temperature. The hair strand is made up of three layers, the outmost layer being called the cuticle. When hair is virgin, the cuticle is unaltered and smooth. When color or bleach is added to the hair strand the cuticle becomes slightly lifted in order the allow color molecules to attach themselves to the second layer of the hair strand.
Hot water opens up the hair cuticle as well. This allows shampoos and conditioners to penetrate the strand, but this also allows color molecules to escape causing hair color to run and fade. Cold water, on the other hand, seals the cuticle layers making it harder for color molecules to be washed out. The colder the water, the stronger the seal! Wait. You’re telling me I have to wash my hair with cold water at home? Nobody wants to take a cold shower! I hear you and I have a solution! Or more so a compromise… Start your shower off chilly. As cold as you are willing to bear. Even luke warm water is better for color longevity than hot! Wash and condition your hair in the cold water and wrap your hair up and out of the way when finished. You can do this a variety of ways! I like to use a microfiber towel for myself, but feel free to use your favorite towel, cap, or clip. Just make sure your hair doesn’t continue to get wet. Now it’s time to turn up that heat and relax because you deserve it babe!
Some of you may finish this and think no! I don’t care what you say I don’t want to take a cold shower. And that is within your right! To those who feel that way I suggest avoiding reds and violets because those are the colors that fade the quickest.
I hope you enjoyed this weeks Tea Time at Roots! See you next week with more tea from your favorite salon. XOX
